The long-delayed reissue of Odessa finally appeared in January.Optimistic fans wondered whether this marked an end to the mysteriouslogjam in the series and would lead to a box with the next three BeeGees albums, namely Cucumber Castle, 2 Years On,and Trafalgar, but it was not to be.

Robin completed an album-length collection of new recordings in 2008,but never released it. In August he gave the lame excuse that he wasdeferring release so that he could concentrate on publicizing theUltimate Bee Gees package due in November. At the same time heprovided his web site members with a clip of a song from his albumcalled ‘Instant Love’ that sounds excellent.

In July fans learned that instead of either the next set of reissues orRobin’s new album, Barry and Robin were arranging the release oftwo more collections of old material, available in two and four disksrespectively. The first one, Ultimate, appeared in November, and the other a full year later.

Warner’s Rhino division, which produced the Bee Gees box sets(despite marketing under the Reprise label), laid off thirty-pluspeople in September, because of a ‘fundamental transformation ofthe physical new release and catalog business’, but also statedthat the surviving staff ‘remain firmly committed to the coreprinciples that made us the company you know and love’. But theywere not able to push the Gibb brothers into getting the reissue series past Odessa.

For several years Robin worked towards greater recognition of thesacrifices of the British armed forces in World War II, particularlythe Royal Air Force. He was instrumental in creation of the RAF BomberCommand Memorial in Green Park, London, dedicated in 2012.

The 1969 album, originally two LP disks, is reissued in a fuzzy redbox containing a 2-CD set of stereo and mono mixes and a third CDcalled Sketches for Odessa. The Sketches disk includesdemos or alternate versions for every song except ‘The BritishOpera’, and adds the two songs not used on the album,‘Nobody’s Someone’ and ‘Pity’. Thebooklet is an essential companion to Sketches since it explainshow each track fits in with the album project. It also mentions whoplays some of the instrumental parts, highlighting Maurice’snon-vocal contributions as well as those of a few guest musicians. For unexplained reasons Barry and Robin did not contribute comments onthe songs as they did for the 2006 box set.

The sound is improved over previous releases, which all sounded alittle muffled. Check the clarity of the cello as soon it comes in onthe first song. There is some tape hiss here and there, and that itcan be heard means the sound has not been overly interfered with inthe transfer to digital. Additional good news is that the compressionevident on the 2006 box is almost gone.

The very rare mono mixes will probably not get immediate attention, and they show fewer significant differences than on the previous threealbums (see the 2006 box), but it is good to have them. As usual thelead vocal and selected tracks are mixed relatively louder to clarifythe sound as heard from one speaker. This was the last Bee Gees albumwith mono mixes. Some of the alternate versions in the Sketchessongs were preserved only in mono rough mixes.

Edited from two shows recorded at the National Tennis Center,Melbourne, on November 17 and 18, 1989. The program is an interestingone because of numerous rarely performed songs from the 1980s and therelatively few songs from the disco era.

Although this is not an authorized release, it appears to belegitimate because of provisions in European law about recordings oflive shows being protected for only twenty years.

Show

The main draw for fans is the ‘box set’ version that has athird disk, a DVD of music clips and videos.

The songs on Ultimate are all overcompressed loud, so it's notfor people who want quality listening. It is certainly betterthan The Record (which is not saying much) and yet not up tothe standard of Odessa.

Five songs appear in mono mixes even though good stereo versionsexist: ‘Words’, ‘I’ve Gotta Get a Message toYou’, ‘New York Mining Disaster 1941’,‘Massachusetts’, and ‘World’.

‘Spicks and Specks’ appears as a live cut even thoughWarner owns rights to the original 1966 studio version. This liveversion from Melbourne, 1989, previously appeared on the Tales fromthe Brothers Gibb box in 1990.

Although no songs from Gibb solo recordings are included, four songswritten for outside artists do appear. ‘Emotion’ is thelater Bee Gees studio recording that was on The Record, and theother three at the end of disk 2 are live cuts from One NightOnly.

The lineup as originally announced had a different running order, shown below. Notice that each disk had the same songs, but in adifferent order, except that three songs were dropped from disk 2:‘The Singer Sang His Song’, ‘Immortality’, and‘Grease’.

The disks were to be titled A Night Out and A Night Inrespectively.

Opening title for The Barry Gibb Talk Show.

The Barry Gibb Talk Show is a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live about a talk show starring Bee Gees lead singer Barry Gibb (played by Jimmy Fallon) and his brother, Robin Gibb (Justin Timberlake).[1][2] The sketch was created by writers Ken Scarborough and Steve Higgins based on an idea from Fallon.[3]

The sketch is characterized by Barry Gibb's accent as well as his falsetto voice, which he breaks into randomly while speaking, and his extremely short temper with his guests, usually political figures. Meanwhile, Robin provides lackluster answers to Barry's questions (usually 'No. No, I don't.') as well as humorous backup for their call and responsefalsetto singing, particularly in the opening and closing credits. Both he and his brother appeared on the March 16, 2010 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon where they all performed together.

The sketch uses the music of the Bee Gees' 1975 hit 'Nights on Broadway' (with parody lyrics) as its theme.

Six episodes of The Barry Gibb Talk Show aired; the first since Robin's death aired on December 21, 2013 and featured cameos from the real Barry Gibb and Madonna.

Episodes[edit]

October 11, 2003[edit]

Justin Timberlake hosted and performed as the musical guest on the premiere episode of The Barry Gibb Talk Show. Barry's guests included Al Franken (played by Jeff Richards), Arianna Huffington (Rachel Dratch) and the then-Lieutenant Governor of California, Cruz Bustamante (Horatio Sanz). At the time, both Huffington and Bustamante were running for Governor of California amidst the recall election that eventually ousted Gray Davis. The show is memorable for Timberlake's inability to maintain a straight face during Fallon's rantings. He can be seen lowering his head occasionally in an attempt to disguise his laughter. This was the only Barry Gibb Talk Show sketch performed while Fallon was still a cast member.

April 9, 2005[edit]

Host Cameron Diaz was dating Timberlake at the time. Fallon returned because he was about to premiere in Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore. Barry's guests were Nancy Pelosi (Diaz), Ann Coulter (Barrymore), and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson (Sanz).

December 16, 2006[edit]

In the skit's third airing, Timberlake hosted for the second time and Fallon returned to portray Barry, whose guests were former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor (Kristen Wiig), Thomas Friedman (Fred Armisen), and Jimmy Carter (Darrell Hammond).

May 9, 2009[edit]

For Timberlake's third hosting turn, Fallon returned to the Barry Gibb role. Barry welcomed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (Kristen Wiig), CNN Commentator Roland S. Martin (Kenan Thompson), and NYU Economics Professor Nouriel Roubini (Armisen). The sketch referenced the Shamwow guy.

May 21, 2011[edit]

Fallon returned for the season finale, Timberlake's fourth hosting turn. Guests included Rachel Maddow (Abby Elliott), Roland S. Martin (Thompson), and Ben Bernanke (Armisen), but the Gibbs spent little time conversing with them except for Bernanke, who occasionally interrupted (drinking water, cell phone ringing). Barry yelled 'I survived The Rapture!', referring to the then-recent end of the world predictions. After Robin revives Barry using gold medallions that produce the same result as a defibrillator, the Gibbs close the sketch by rapping the 'Rappers Delight' lyrics over the closing theme.

December 21, 2013[edit]

Fallon hosted while Timberlake was the musical guest for the episode. Guests included Megyn Kelly (Cecily Strong), Paul Ryan (Taran Killam), and Madonna (as herself). At the end of the sketch the real Barry Gibb made an appearance, singing and dancing with Fallon and Timberlake, comically pointing to Fallon's chest hair at 'Talkin’ about chest hair. Talkin’ about crazy cool medallions!'
