The Double is a 2011 Americanspy film, directed by Michael Brandt and starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace. It was released on October 28, 2011. The film garnered a negative reception from critics.

Plot[edit]

Two FBI agents are conducting surveillance at a warehouse. As a U.S. Senator Dennis Darden (Ed Kelly) walks out of the door, he is approached by an assassin from behind who slits his throat and escapes. The agents rush to the scene to find the man dead. However, they could not identify the assassin as he committed the murder in darkness. Later, CIA officers arrive on the scene and take charge.

Retired operative Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) is summoned by CIA director Tom Highland (Martin Sheen) to look into the murder. He is introduced to a young FBI agent, Ben Geary (Topher Grace) who is an expert on a former Soviet operative known as Cassius. Geary reasons that Cassius is the assassin due to his signature throat-slitting (garrotting) method.

Paul and Ben visit Brutus (Stephen Moyer), one of Cassius's proteges, who is locked up in prison, to learn the whereabouts of Cassius. They provide him with a radio and leave. The prisoner then swallows the batteries from the radio and fakes a poisoning/upset stomach. Upon arriving at a hospital, he regurgitates and spits out the batteries, overpowers the medical staff, and escapes. In the basement's garage, he is attacked by Paul, who reveals himself to be Cassius himself, the very operative who had previously trained the fugitive. Cassius slits his throat. He then moves to eliminate Ben too, only stopping when interrupted by Ben's wife—Cassius is unable to murder Geary in front of his family. Upon investigating the crime scene, Ben grows increasingly suspicious of Paul. Meanwhile, a Russian terrorist and murderer, Bozlovski (Tamer Hassan), has entered the U.S.

As the investigation deepens, Paul warns Ben to pull out, due to the possibility of harm not only to himself but his family. Ben, who has become obsessed with the idea that Paul is Cassius, starts his own parallel investigation. Meanwhile, Paul tries to contact Bozlovski in a factory where he escapes after an intense firefight. Ben examines another throat-slitting murder of Bozlovski's associate at the same site and is now convinced Paul is indeed Cassius.

Ben pieces together the events of Paul's life and determines that not only is Paul actually Cassius, but also that he is systematically murdering the people involved in the death of his wife and child, who were assassinated by Bozlovski.

Paul has now tracked down Bozlovski to a shipyard warehouse. A while later, Ben also arrives at the building. Win98 iso download deutsch songs. After being confronted with the evidence, Paul confesses everything. Paul then confronts Ben with the fact that Ben is a Russian spy, which Paul learned at one of Ben's informant drop-offs. He is able to convince Ben that Bozlovski is the actual threat. When Ben reveals that he has plans to return to Russia after this is over, Paul tries to convince him to stay in the FBI and with the family he has grown to love.

Together they hunt down Bozlovski inside the shipyard's warehouse. Bozlovski attacks Paul and Ben, and in the ensuing struggle, a mortally wounded Paul slits Bozlovski's throat using his garrote-watch. However, Paul himself later succumbs to his own injuries. As the only witness, FBI agent Ben relays the incident to his superiors and claims that Bozlovski was Cassius, thereby securing Paul's reputation and recognizing his heroism. As Ben departs, the CIA director Highland asks him whether he would ever consider working at the CIA.

The film ends with Ben returning to his home as a now-defected man who is no longer a double agent.

Reception[edit]

The Double received mostly negative reviews from critics, holding a 20% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 50 reviews, with an average score of 4/10.^[2] Stephanie Merry of The Washington Post gave note of Brandt's scripting of the story, saying that 'questionable motives and unbelievable decisions are relatively small potatoes compared with the Sputnik-size plotholes.' She also gave credit to his style of direction for having 'sweeping shots of the nation's capital, along with some claustrophobic shots that add anxiety to early scenes' but said that 'It's not enough to boost up this botched attempt to tinker with something that, while predictable, is at least dependable.'^[3] Randy Cordova of The Arizona Republic criticized Brandt's direction and screenwriting for lacking any 'menace or mystery to the proceedings' and its two main leads' characters for having no chemistry and feeling by-the numbers, saying that, 'With its convoluted plot and fading stars, The Double feels like a straight-to-DVD feature that somehow sneaked onto the big screen. It's simply not very good.'^[4] In a review for the A.V. Club, Noel Murray gave the film a 'C-'. He felt that Brandt and Haas waste their premise by setting it up like 'a typical episode of any basic-cable action series' saying that 'while it holds a few surprises, the twists feel writerly, not organic.'^[5]Roger Ebert highlighted Gere's 'subtle catlike body language' in his performance that displays his well-worn screen presence but was critical of Brandt and Haas's script containing thriller clichés and 'familiar action-movie tropes' compared to their previous effort 3:10 to Yuma, concluding that it 'doesn't approach it in terms of quality. None of it is particularly compelling. Most of the time we're waiting for the other shoe to drop. When, very late in the film, the screenplay comes up with a third shoe, that's going too far.'^[6]Paste writer Annlee Ellingson gave the film praise for being 'a throwback genre flick, complete with a throwback lead that gives away its double cross early yet maintains enough mystery to keep viewers moderately intrigued.'^[7]

There has been quite a bit of controversy lately regarding unrated, extended editions. Back in March 2011, Hangover director Todd Phillips slammed the unrated cut of The Hangover, which added roughly 8 minutes of deleted scenes back into the film. He claimed that unrated, extended cuts do not meet DGA rules and went on to let fans know that The Hangover II would not host an unrated cut when it came to home video.
Yes, it's true, the unrated cut is an often overused, annoying marketing scheme designed to draw in fans. You rent a film expecting more gore or nudity and you get a minute of extended scenes and outtakes that add nothing to the film. And not only does it undercut the theatrical exhibition, offering a longer version of the film you didn't get to see in theaters, but it's not always in line with the director's intention, either.
That being said, are there some extended and/or unrated cuts that work? Absolutely!
This list compiles 25 of our favorite unrated and/or extended cuts that may or may not necessarily be director-approved (though some probably are). This list does not include well-known Director's Cuts like Almost Famous, Kingdom of Heaven, Leon, Daredevil, Donnie Darko, Blade Runner, Rambo, etc. Nor does it include big-budget special extended editions, workprints and re-edits like Avatar, Highlander II, Sin City, Watchmen, Alien 3, Aliens and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. Or more obvious extended editions like King Kong, Lord of the Rings or Gladiator -- all outstanding extended cuts, by the way.
Rather, we'll examine the evolution of the unrated cut, and note some top-quality unrated, extended editions that hit the market along the way.
As always, if you've got suggestions for other unrated, extended cuts we might have missed, feel free to let us know in the forums below. A quick Amazon search for 'unrated' yields about 80,000 results. In other words, we probably skipped a few titles.

Blade Trinity (2004, Action) Available on DVD. Amount of time added: 9 minutes

While Blade Trinity is still a pretty big disappointment in its unrated form, it's a much more ambiguous, enjoyable experience. With a few interesting character moments restored, the film feels less like a patchwork and more like a real movie. Now if only it would have deleted a few of the sloppy comedic cues and tightened the overall pace, Blade Trinity would be considered a decent movie. Alas, it's still not a great film, but it is a pretty great unrated cut.

Team America: World Police: Uncensored and Unrated (2004, Comedy) Available on DVD. Amount of time added: 1 minute

Contrarian counter-culture aficionados Trey Parker and Matt Stone were born for the unrated, uncensored market, yet their work is constantly censored and hacked up (see their frustratingly edited 200th two-part episode from South Park: Season 14). Team America's unrated cut doesn't add a whole lot, but one key scene -- a hilarious moment of puppet sex between our two leads -- goes entirely uncensored here. It's the little things that make a movie better, and puppet sex makes Team America a better movie.

Eurotrip was one of those films that felt like it would be a generic teen sex romp, and it does play to many generic cues, too. But it ended up more refreshing, offbeat and uproarious than most comedies of its day. Matt Damon's 'Scotty Doesn't Know' song still gets stuck in my head, and the robot fight sequence ranks among my favorite on-screen comedic battles. The unrated version adds even more comedy to the fray all while tying up a few loose ends in very clever ways. Plus there's a token bit of added nudity.

The Comebacks was a huge mess when it first came to theaters, a bottom-barrel 84-minute spoof that played to the lowest common denominator (i.e. fans of Date Movie). But when the film came to video, and got a pretty hearty unrated, extended edition, it blossomed into a much sharper, more focused, funnier spoof of sports movies. Admittedly, the film still has more misses than hits, but some of those hits are damn funny. And with an expanded narrative, more members of the cast get to shine. It's hardly perfect, but The Comebacks represents one of the better sight-gag spoofs out there.

Swimming Pool: Unrated Version (2003, Sexual Thriller) Available on DVD. Amount of time added: 1 minute

If you're in the market for a somewhat sleazy Hitchcockian thriller, Swimming Pool should do the trick. Not only is the film riddled with twists and turns, it also boasts a very-naked young starlet, French actress Ludivine Sagnier (best known as Tinker Bell in the 2003 adaptation of Peter Pan). In its unrated form, the film features even more nudity, including a few gratuitous close-ups. Now, one could argue cheeky exploitation; however, the cut scenes actually add quite a bit of sexual tension to the narrative, making the unrated cut superior to the R-rated version.
